The History of

OUR GREAT CHURCH

On October 19, 1890, the foundation for what would be Emmanuel Baptist Church was formed. The purchase of the land marked the beginning of many blessed years to come.

Rev. Morton Carter, the pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church at that time, acquired the land from Ms. Remus Fuget (fow-get). This sale was made and accepted in consideration of the full price and sum of fifty-four dollars and twenty-six cents ($54.26). Witnesses to the sale were Paul Leche and W. D. Park staff members of the Clerk of Court Office in Donaldsonville, Louisiana in the Parish of Ascension, State of Louisiana. After purchasing the land, the foundation of a building took form of what today is Emmanuel Baptist Church. The church was built and lead by the pastorialship of Rev. Morton Carter. As the years progressed, Rev. Carter prepared for his replacement by choosing his Sunday school teacher and associate minister, a man whom he baptized, John Polete. After the death of Rev. Carter, John Polete was ordained and installed as pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church by the Second District Association. Rev. Polete served as pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Chruch for over twenty years.

In May 1941, Rev. Polete baptized over 20 teenagers in Bayou Lafourche, three of which included his daughters. In 1947, a pool was built in the back of the church for the purpose of baptism. The new pool served its purpose for yet another large baptism to be performed by Rev. Polete. This time his son and youngest daughter were among the candidates. This proved to be the last baptism Rev. Polete would conduct because of physical limitations. He continued to preach the Word of God and do the work for which he so loved doing until he was unable to do so because of illness. Rev. Polete had one other thing to accomplish at Emmanuel before stepping down as pastor. On May 29, 1957 the Articles of Incorporation of Emmanuel Baptist Church of Donaldsonville, Louisiana were established and recorded in the records of Ascension Parish on June 4, 1957.

The time had come to fulfill the need of a successor for Rev. Polete just as Rev. Polete had done after Rev. Morton Carter. Having served under the leadership of, an associate minister with Rev. Polete, Rev. Percy E. Truehill became the next pastor of Emmanuel in 1960. Rev. Truehill began ministering the Word of God to the members of Emmanuel. After stepping down as pastor, he continued to lead us in powerful, spirit-filled, and heart touched prayers during altar call on Sunday until his health began to fail. During his term as pastor, Rev. Truehill was successful in burning of the mortgage on the church, installing an indoor pool, and pavement for the parking lot.

As those before him, Rev. Truehill saw the time for change and an era at Emmanuel. In 2001, Rev. Truehill gave reign to his successor, and Associate minister Rodney M. Dugas who served from 2001 to 2007.

Time brought about a change in many ways for Emmanuel. We have been tested; but, through it all we made it. In all these years we have been led by Rev. Morton Carter. Rev. John Polete, Rev. Percy E. Truehill, Rev. Rodney M. Dugas, Rev. Christopher D. Smith, Sr., Rev. Reynaldo King, I.

Today we are truly blessed to have as our shepherd, leader, teacher, counselor, servant, and friend, Rev. Charles Ray Brown, Sr. Thus far, under the leadership of Pastor Brown, various ministries have been established such as; One Hour of Power, Mid-week Seasonal Revival, Prison Ministry, Marriage Ministry, Healthy Lives Ministry, Monthly Newsletter, etc. Many physical updates have been implemented at the church such as, altar and pulpit furniture, computer room, Sunday School office, lighting, church logo decals, etc.

We are currently on target to paying out the church’s 2nd mortgage and seeking to acquired land for the building of a multi-purpose facility for the purpose of refuge, repast, reception, and recreation. Together we are growing and flowing in love, becoming more Christ-centered, bible-based (learning and getting to know the bible), and being family-focused. We are committed to becoming disciples every day for Christ. We are blessed here at Emmanuel because God is with us; and, He has been for many years. With prayers, unity and love, the Emmanuel Baptist Church will forever stand.
